Christina Zimmermann
artist/filmmaker, Basel (Switzerland)

After completing her studies in Fine Arts / German Language and Literature in Kassel (Germany) and Granada (Spain), she studied Film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Germany). In her audiovisual installation work as well as in her narrative films she searches for a productive interference between the expressive means of the film footage, its inherent gaze, and the discreet narration behind it. Her graduation film "Long-distance writing" is a parable about human relations by means of an exploration of outdated communication technology.

After her Studies she dedicated herself to teaching: From 2005-2010 she worked as Assistant Professor for Visual Communication (video) at Bauhaus-University Weimar. In this period, Christina concentrated on dramaturgy and perception; among her credits as a screenwriter is the award-winning puppet animation "Lovesick" by Slovenian filmmaker Spela Cadez. In 2016 she graduated summa cum laude from Bauhaus-University Weimar with a PhD dissertation on "Ambiguity in Contemporary Cinema". Subsequently she gave lectures on her findings at international conferences; they were published in the Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema (Intellect) and in a Conference Reader on Artistic Research (Bauhaus-University Press). In 2017 Christina was lecturer at the College of Art and Design (FHNW), Basel, and since then she has continually been teaching at the Master in Film programme at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). Her focus is on experimental narration, including forms of interactive narration and on documentary strategies. From 2020-2024 she is currently working on a research project (funded by Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Ambizione) in order to develop an interactive database-driven biografical format. Increasing accessibility of archival sources from bequests and private collections is one of its main goals in order to contribute to a vital imagination of the past.
